So many feelings to start our Saturday: thrilled to have traveled so far; sad it's our last day biking with Sam; exhausted after a full week biking; excited to see Elizabeth; and grateful for Marie and others support. I think I let my sadness at knowing it was the last day with Sam and just being exhausted overwhelm all the positives of today, which is too bad. We conquered 45 miles under less than ideal road conditions, wind and rolling hills. It was a hard day of riding yet looking back I can see that it was a successful day. Sam was a wonderful riding partner, always positive and encouraging, and we enjoyed his company on and off the bike. Marie and I still have Sam's words ringing in our head as he randomly sang out "Deep in the Heart of Texas". It was fun hearing some memories from his previous rides. At one town that we passed through, Sam commented that he will probably never be back there again. I responded "never say never" and we then laughed as it was his third time in 12 years in this tiny town in rural Texas. We were on highway type roads most of the day and saw some interesting sights including a random sculpture in the middle of endless fields as well as a huge home just left to decay. For the second time that week, we ran across a "Cowboy Church" and I think we will see more as we continue travelling across Texas. We drove to the Hampton Inn at Dallas-Fort Worth airport to end the wonderful week of riding with Sam. I feel very blessed that Sam fit this week of riding with me into his schedule and that I had so much time and fun with my favorite son.
