Waiting out the windstorm seems to have been a good decision although we've felt "stuck" in the Springervale/Show Low area for too long. Dale and Marie broke up the monotony by going to the theatre last night; first time in 2 1/2 years because of Covid-19. They enjoyed "The Lost City" as a silly escapism type movie once you got beyond the many unrealistic aspects They don't expect it to win any Academy Awards...

Today started bright and sunny with the temperature in the upper 30's and only a little breeze. We started a little late to avoid the cold and comfortably navigated our biking plan. We did chuckle at the road caution signs. An early one said, "Cross winds next 7 miles". Seven miles later a new sign said the same, "Cross winds next 7 miles". Seven miles later the caution sign said, "Gusty winds next 7 miles".

We arrived in Springerville shortly after noon on the bicycles and enjoyed a meal at a Mexican restaurant before returning by truck back to Show Low.

The story goes that Show Low got its name when two ranchers decided the area wasn't big enough for both of them and a card game determined who stayed. The winner who "showed low" won with a deuce of clubs. Show Low is a town with a population of just over 11,000. We visited the town historical museum which was set up in a unique way with 17 rooms each having a different theme with antiques and keepsakes in each. Some represented: families; pioneer women's clothing; artifacts pertaining to Native Americans that lived in the region; an old post office; a cell from the Show Low jail, former town businesses; a room on ranches with brands from historical ranches in the area burned into a barnwood wall; newspaper clippings and photos about a terrible forest fire that burned nearly half a million acres about 20 years ago and a diorama of the area with H O scale model trains running and showing the what the area was like around 100 years ago. Dale asked an attendant (one of the train engineers) if the railroad tracks still exist. He replied that there aren't any more trains running, but they understand the tracks were never removed...but no one has been able to find them - odd. We decided to head back to the hotel and do laundry in preparation of continuing our travels west tomorrow although I think Dale wanted to stay another day and search for the railroad tracks.
