Normally, Sunday would be a rest day. However, the weather forecast for Monday is for thunderstorms so we decided to ride today and take Monday as the rest day. We were hopeful that, other than church traffic, the roads would be quieter. There were a few logging and other truck traffic but overall it was a good travel day. It was hilly and we managed to ride 40 miles and enjoyed a delightful section of new road for about 10 miles of it.

Hotels are few and far between in this area so we traveled to Greenwood, MS for Sunday into Tuesday. Greenwood and local surrounds are notable for several things: it boasts that it is the Cotton Capital of the US: the largest grain elevator I have ever seen; the start of the MS delta; a vey large cross memorial, and a strong influence on the blues music as well as the birthplace of Bobbie Lee Gentry. We were not surprised about the size of the grain elevator since there are HUGE fields before we entered the town. I have included a picture of me in front of the cross. I think I look tired after 8 straight days of biking :). Bobbi Lee Gentry wrote and sang the "Ode to Billie Joe". It spent 4 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and changed how people see country music. She won Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Voice Performance in 1968. After the song got big, dozens of people jumped off the Tallahatchie bridge but fortunately none died. They then put up siding to prevent more of this type of activity.
